Mbale

Overview

Mbale is a city in southeastern Uganda near the Kenyan border. It is about 518.8 square kilometers and roughly 225 kilometers away from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. Mbale is situated on the western foothills of Mount Elgon, the oldest extinct volcano in East Africa. The mountainous regions are filled with lush forests and rich with flora and fauna. The glorious views are great for hiking and wandering around.

If you are taking the Mbale tour, there are some attractions around and nearby the city that we suggest you do not miss.

Mount Elgon: Located on the border of Uganda and Kenya, it is estimated that the mountain is around 24 million years old. The mountain is home to several indigenous tribes, with their rich culture and heritage, many of whom consider the mountain the embodiment of their founding father. Many rivers and swamps are found in Elgon’s valleys and slopes, making the environment rich with vegetation. All these elements create a picturesque view for the travelers and make the visit to the mountain a must
Mount Elgon National Park: The national park covering the mountain and its vicinities is divided by the Uganda-Kenya border. The park covers a total area of about 1300 square kilometers, most of which is in Uganda. The national park is home to many species of trees, plants, birds, and mammals, many of which are endangered. Tourists can go on nature walks, summit hikes, or spend time bird watching. They can also visit hot water springs near the crater, and many caves dotted about the environment. If you manage to visit the caves, don’t forget to take a look at the ancient cave paintings!
Nyero rock paintings: These rock paintings are dated back to the 12th century. The creators of these sacred artworks are mainly unknown, but they remain an essential part of the Ugandan heritage and that of the African culture as a whole. They are listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Visiting them would be a fantastic safari activity.
Sipi Falls: This is a series of three waterfalls in the district of Kapchorwa, northeast of Mbale. Located inside Mount Elgon National Park, these magical waterfalls offer a great adventure. They are one of the best sights in all of Uganda. You can participate in hiking, mountain climbing, and cave expeditions. Visit the falls and enjoy a stunning view of the Karamoja plains, Lake Kyoga, and the hills of Mount Elgon.
Soroti: Soroti is a commercial and municipal center in Uganda, near Lake Kyoga. It is known for its various mosques, temples, Sikh gurdwaras, and many churches. Soroti is about 112 kilometers (70 miles) northwest of Mbale. It is between Mbale and Lira. If you visit Soroti, remember to climb the Soroti Rock, a rock formation that towers the city. It offers a great top view of Mount Elgon and its surroundings.

Tororo: Tororo is a town located about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) west of Malaba, near the Kenya border. It is 209 kilometers (130 miles) east of Kampala. Like Soroti, one of Tororo’s main attractions is a great rock formation known as the Tororo Rock. A hike to the top of the rock takes up to an hour, but the view is worth it. Tremendous and frequent thunderstorms occur in this city. This city is one of the most thunderstorm-prone cities in the world, so be advised!
Mbale Municipal Stadium: They hold soccer matches in this Stadium near Mbale Customs Bond.

Tourist Transportation

Like many major cities in Uganda, a railway in Mbale connects it to nearby towns. Other means of transportation are also available to the tourists. Buses and taxis are there to take you to your desired destinations. For getting around town, tuk-tuks and boda bodas are the cheapest choices, and safaris can take you on off-road trips in the outskirts.
