Entebbe

Overview

Entebbe is a town in central Uganda, about 36 kilometers (22 miles) south of the capital city, Kampala. This town is surrounded by water on Lake Victoria Peninsula. Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa, and Entebbe sits on a peninsula on the lake’s northern shores.

During the British occupation of Uganda, the city of Entebbe had been the country’s capital, and presently, the president of Uganda resides here.

Entebbe is the only town in Uganda with an international airport; therefore, all visitations from overseas start and end in this very town. In case you wish to take an Entebbe tour, read the following to know what to do there and how to make the best of your time in Entebbe.

Top Attraction

While on the Entebbe tour, you can visit many spots around the city to make your adventure in Uganda unique and memorable. These spots include (but are not limited to):

  • National Botanical Gardens: If you find yourself in Entebbe, make sure to take a stroll around the well-kept Botanical Garden that borders Entebbe bay. You can participate in many activities, including biking, nature walks, bird-watching, and monkey feeding. Furthermore, they hold music festivals, like the Milege festival every November
Close to the lake’s shore, the Garden includes an area of untouched rainforest, which is spectacular for its rich birdlife. From the Garden, you can also plan a boat trip to the Ssese Islands, in the northwestern corner of Lake Victoria.
  • Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC): This wildlife conservation and education center, originally known as the Entebbe Zoo, is dedicated to rescuing and resettling endangered animals. It is an exciting place for animal lovers to see and learn about chimpanzees, lions, and the animals of the African ecosystem. You can spend your time trailing the natural and pristine forests. But if you’re interested in interacting with the animals up close and personal, there are special programs available for you! One is “Chimpanzee Close Up,” where you can go and have direct contact with the chimpanzees. Another is “Keeper For a Day,” where visitors can spend time with the animal keepers and participate in hands-on experiences like feeding them. It’s an adventure you do not want to miss!
  • Entebbe Golf Club: The club, founded in 1900, is home to the oldest golf course in East Africa. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre neighbors the Entebbe Golf Club in the south.
  • Historical sights: There are historical sites in Kigungu where the people of Uganda were first introduced to the Catholic faith.
  • Other Activities: You can cruise the largest lake in Africa and go on fishing trips. You can also go on adventures in the nearby Mabamba swamp and have bird-watching experiences, where you can spot the pre-historic  “shoebill” in its natural habitat. You can stroll the shores at sunset or go to bars for a drink with friends at night.

Tourist Transportation

There are many ways to navigate around the city. One example is the “Matatus” or public minibusses that travel in set routes. The other is the boda bodas, which are widely available throughout the country and are cheaper than metered taxis. Airport taxis are available to get you from the airport to your hotels.

Boat rides are also available if you wish to cruise the greatest lake in Africa or visit the Ssese Islands. These rides can take you on adventures like fishing, bird watching, and chimpanzee viewing on the islands and can provide you with quite relaxing experiences.

When Is the Best Time to Take a tour

Entebbe is never dry. Since it has a tropical rainforest climate, there is heavy rain throughout the year. The weather is almost always humid and warm, and the temperature rarely drops below 20 °C. The temperature varies so insignificantly that there are no real hot and cold seasons. That being said, the drier season spans from June to August, with July being the month with the fewest wet days.

The best time to visit Entebbe is from June to September, although it is not that different.
