Historical landmarks are scattered across Trabzon, but the one you cannot miss is the Trabzon Castle. This is a series of defensive stone walls and ramparts which stretch from the hills overlooking the city to the Black Sea shore. The oldest parts of this castle go back to the Roman period, while some parts are dated back to the Byzantine Empire. It is one of the most magnificent historical monuments in Trabzon.
Uzungol Lake is a famous tourist destination in Trabzon, 90 kilometers from the city. It is a grand lake encircled on all sides by green mountains. It has a calm, quiet, peaceful atmosphere, great weather, and a fantastic spot for walking or cycling. The scenery in June is breathtaking, it’s true. But if you can, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Uzungol in the winter; you will be amazed by the incredible beauty of the snow-covered landscape.
One of Trabzon’s most famous touristy places, Trabzon Square or Ataturk Square, is located in the city center and near the city’s main tourist attractions. Its vicinity has many historical landmarks and some of the most well-known hotels, restaurants, cafés, hospitals, and government offices. It also has many stores, selling both Turkish and foreign brands.
Sumela Monastery is 48 kilometers south of Trabzon city center, in the Altindere Valley National Park, in the Maçka district. Sitting narrowly on the ledge of a sheer cliff face in the Pontic Mountains and surrounded by woodlands, this ancient structure is a marvel to behold! This complex is not only among Trabzon’s most beautiful attractions but is also one of the most important historical landmarks in all of Turkey.
Ataturk Palace, built in 1903 by the Greek banker Konstantin Kabayanidis, is located on the outskirts of Trabzon, in Soğuksu Village. It’s known as Ataturk Palace since it was gifted to Ataturk when he came to visit Trabzon. It was transformed into a museum around the turn of the 20th century. It is placed on a hilltop, with a beautiful garden on the outside.
Trabzon is good in the spring and fall (March-May, and September–November, respectively). The climate of Trabzon is warm and humid subtropical, with much precipitation due to being near the Black Sea. The weather cools off during the winter, but it might snow.
