Top Attraction

If you plan on visiting Izmir, there are many tourist attractions that you can put on your list. The following are some of the best Izmir attractions to help you plan your itinerary.
  • Konak Square & the Clock Tower
The first place you should see in Izmir is Konak Square, located in the city center. The square also features a clock tower, which is a gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II to Ottoman King Abdulhamit II The elaborate Ottoman architecture of the tower is fascinating and includes fountains on each side. This iconic piece points to the entrance of the ancient bazaar and is very handy, especially with proximity to buses, trams, metro, and city ferries.
  • Kemeralti Bazaar & Surrounding Markets
From Konak Square, head straight towards the beautiful Kemeralti market. You can spend hours wandering the bustling market streets, reminiscent of Istanbul’s Egyptian Bazaar.  There, you can immerse yourself in the cultural wonders of Turkey; visit the small kiosks selling dried herbs and vegetables, try traditional Turkish food in the many restaurants around the market, buy colorful spices and local teas, and find eccentric clothing and handicrafts.
  • Agora Archaeological Site of Smyrna
Close to Konak Square and Kemeralti market, you can find the Agora of Izmir, aka the Smyrna Agora. The Agora is now an open-air museum initially constructed in the 4th century BC by the Greeks With its ancient ruins, arches, marble columns, basilicas, etc., it is one of the only agoras in the world constructed within a modern-day metropolitan city. The Izmir Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Art and History presently house some of the treasures excavated from this site.
  • Culture Park
Izmir is a culturally rich city. There are concerts, exhibitions, music festivals, and book fairs throughout the year, and they are held in the Izmir Culture Park. The Izmir Book Fair, for example, takes place at the park every spring for ten days The park also hosts the Izmir International Fair in the summer, where national and international singers and artists entertain locals and tourists for over a week.  There’s also an interior history and art museum, an amusement park, and a lake. Aside from the cultural importance of the park, it is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and go for a run or jog in the beautiful scenery.

Tourist Transportation

Izmir serves as a crossroad for western Anatolia. Izmir has a well-developed bus network, a growing metro and commuter rail system, and an extensive urban ferry network.  A motorway and a ring road connect the city to Çeşme and Aydın. The Izmir Municipality owns and operates four different public transportation providers.
