Moshi

Moshi

Overview

Moshi is a city in northern Tanzania on the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and a dormant volcano. It is located near the Kenyan border, and its proximity to Arusha makes touring the Serengeti region possible. Moshi is the capital of the Kilimanjaro region, making it the center of government activities, finance, trade, and tourism.

Moshi tours offer one-day and multiple-day trips to the area. On a one-day excursion to Moshi, you can enjoy short trips to Kilimanjaro, Materuni Waterfalls, and Kikuletwa Hot Springs. However, multi-day tours provide visitors with longer, more exciting adventures, such as Machame Route Kilimanjaro hiking and Africa natural tours. Ngorongoro, Manyara, and Tarangire Safaris are unique tours that allow you to explore intact African wildlife and nature

Top Attraction

  • Mount Kilimanjaro National Park

Let’s stop pretending; we all know that all Moshi tourists visit the city for Kili. If we are to list Moshi attractions or those of Tanzania, Kilimanjaro National Park definitely takes the cake. With Kili being the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, that doesn’t seem far-fetched. Summiting the mountain can take days, so you can go on a day hike if you do not want to miss the opportunity.

  • Kikuletwa Hot Springs

Many Moshi tour travelers visit the city for the geothermal pools surrounding it (Kili used to be a volcano). The Kikuletwa or the Chemka Hot Springs are among the most popular tourist destinations near Kilimanjaro Mountain. The refreshing crystal-clear water of these springs might not be that hot. Nonetheless, it will provide visitors with an enjoyable time with friends and family.

  • Hiking Mount Meru

Mount Meru National Park offers its hikers a unique sightseeing experience. While hiking, you can spot giraffes, colobus monkeys, elephants, baboons, and buffaloes. The parkland, grassland, and rainforest beauty at the lower slopes astonish every visitor. The summit of this old volcano is covered with everlasting flowers in an alpine desert. During your hike, you can spot many amazing birds the mountain is home to, including lanner falcons, crowned eagles, flamingos, and Levaillant’s cuckoos.

  • Soweto Memorial Market

It is an outdoor market selling streetwear, art, and handcrafted goods in a lovely live music environment. The market started working to provide an environment for young and aspirant entrepreneurs, innovators, and creators. Here, they can showcase and sell their products, meet like-minded individuals, share new ideas, get advice from reputable brands, create new connections and get the necessary exposure to boost their business. Food trucks are also available that serve visitors tasty local food and drinks.

Tourist Transportation

The easiest way to get inside Moshi is by the Kilimanjaro International Airport. It is less than an hour away from the city and provides easy access. You can also enter the city by Bus. For example, a bus ride from Dar es Salaam to Moshi takes about 10 hours.

Once inside the city, you can easily find your way around on foot since Moshi is not that big. If you need to get around fast, you can take taxis, tuk-tuks, boda bodas (motorcycle taxis), or dala dalas (public minibuses). The price is always negotiable, so don’t hesitate to ask for a fairer price.

Nightlife

Three amazing nightclubs are located in the middle of the town of Moshi, welcoming guests with some energetic dance floors and lively African band music. Enjoy a night full of music and dance while serving national drinks and local snacks such as samosas and Ishigaki. These club services are available for adults only, however.

When Is the Best Time to Take a tour

The climate around the foothills of Kilimanjaro is pleasant all around the year, and you can always spend a relaxing holiday there. If you wish to ascend Kili, we recommend January and February or August to October. During these times, the weather isn’t as hot or humid, there aren’t as many tourists, and the skies are clear. So, it’s the perfect time for some nature walks or hikes.
